';Lawrence of Arabia / David Lean

1962. Colour. UK. 227 mins. DVD.

David Lean hits his full epic stride with the best film of his career. A great script by Robert Bolt, stunning photography by Freddie Young, awe-inspiring locations in the Jordanian desert and a monumental score by Maurice Jarre give the star cast every opportunity to shine 鈥?and they do. Peter O鈥橳oole as T E Lawrence is especially effective in portraying the oscillations between gangling British officer and graceful silk-robed desert leader; and there are moments when he comes very near to the ambivalence and torment of the enigmatic hero. Anthony Quinn exudes banditry as the magnificent Auda abu Tayi. Alec Guinness plays a dignified and world weary Prince Feisal (for Feisal read Hussein) and Omar Sharif smoulders as Sherif Ali (for Ali read Feisal). Claude Rains and Jack Hawkins weave webs of political intrigue in the background. The film is by no means an accurate presentation of Lawrence鈥檚 Seven Pillars of Wisdom (see our Bookshop) and the book was itself more the journal of a personal odyssey than an objective history of the Arab campaigns. But forget the historical carping: sit back, relax and enjoy. The double DVD version was fully restored in 1989 under the supervision of Martin Scorcese and Steven Spielberg, and the special features have lots of fascinating background detail.';How accurate , in your opinion, is the storyline from the famous movie ';Lawrence of Arabia'; from the 60's ?
It does follow the true story Quite well including the Political Intrigue Behind Lawrence's back between the French and The British who cut up the Middle East to suite their own needs

there were several famous actors Peter O'Toole as Lawrence

and Sir Alec Guinness as the arabian Prince ( Faisal ???)

Anthony Quinn Arab leader

Jack Hawkins senior British Officer

Anthony Quayle

Omar Sharif a tribal leader

Jose Ferrer as a Turkish Officer who whipped Lawrence

Claude Reins as the French Liaison

Arthur Kennedy as the Reporter
It came out in the early 1960s. Peter O'Tool was the major star -- pretty good for a first film role, right? The film took something like eight Academy Awards, so you can see it was a smash in the USA. As to how it fared in England, I haven't any info on that. It might not have been as popular, because a number of Brit icons were not portrayed flatteringly. (But that's just a guess on my part.) I was fascinated with the character of Lawrence upon seeing this film, and read everything I could about his real-life adventures. To my pleasant surprise, I found the film quite un-typically accurate. BTW, there is a sort of sequel about Lawrence's role at the WWI peace talks. The film is ';The Most Dangerous Man Alive.'; It's fascinating. As to how much I liked the film, well, I named one of my kids after Lawrence -- felt one could not have a better namesake than the brave and idealistic El Orens. (My other kid is named after John Keats -- another brave idealist.)
Read Seven Pillars of Wisdom and find out.
