You simply have to know what do they expect from you and meet their expectations. General things to show to your good friends are: loyalty, honesty, support, sharing, caring. For a particular friend you have to know his/her preferences and what makes him/her happy and try your best to do what makes them happy in your unique way.
Sometimes I would make a cd with songs that they would like and inspire them, do an errand for them, lunch or dinner is already something we would normally do. Make a photo album of something you both did together or a photo cd. Or a letter or card about what makes them special and appreciated by you.
